As SNAP recipients are challenged with making their February benefits, issued in mid-January, last days or weeks longer than usual, food banks and pantries are gearing up for a surge of visits from people running low on their benefits. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP), 90 percent of SNAP recipients must make their benefits last 40 days, and more than 4 million households face a SNAP gap of more than 50 days. The longer periods between SNAP payments could strain emergency food providers already experiencing pressure in many neighborhoods, said Dottie Rosenbaum, a SNAP expert at CBPP.
