St. David’s Foundation and KaBOOM! Put Kids First by Increasing Opportunities to Play in McDade, TX

200 Community Volunteers Unite to Build a New Playground at McDade Elementary School

Volunteers from St. David’s Foundation, Bastrop County Cares, McDade ISD and the community will join KaBOOM!, the national nonprofit dedicated to bringing safe places to play to kids all over North America, on Saturday, May 4th, 2019 to transform an empty site into a kid-designed, state-of-the-art playground in just six hours at McDade Elementary School. The new playground will help make play the easy choice for kids and families in McDade, TX.

Play is essential to physical, creative, cognitive, social and emotional development. Community partners chose the McDade Independent School District for the new playground based on a number of key factors. They discovered that there are no other open playgrounds within at least 15 miles of McDade, the area is rapidly growing with young active families, and the existing park area is a hub of activity for the community after school hours and on the weekends. This helped make the McDade campus a perfect location in this unique community for families to play, meet new friends, and gather to celebrate a healthy lifestyle. Through this playground project, Bastrop County Cares and McDade ISD will work with St. David’s Foundation and KaBOOM! to make a difference in their community and address the most urgent needs of kids.

In March, kids from the surrounding community came together to draw their dream playground. The playground is based off their drawings and will provide thousands of kids in McDade with a great, safe place to play for years to come.

This playground is part of a broader effort led by St. David’s Foundation and KaBOOM! to ensure communities have great PLAYces for kids and families. Through this partnership, KaBOOM! and St. David’s Foundation are creating an oasis where kids feel valued and loved, and where their potential is supported, nurtured and celebrated.
