This summer, in partnership with OST Cares and Dr. Raphael Travis of Texas State University, we hosted the RISE: Resilience in Self-Expression Retreat, a dynamic weekend experience designed for youth ages 16-21 in Bastrop County.
With support from community organizations and mental-health professionals, participants explored music, art, movement, and meaningful dialogue to build resilience, self-confidence, and emotional well-being.
Addressing Youth Wellness
Listening to students, community partners, and local educators, we identified a strong need for creative, inclusive spaces where young people can authentically express themselves, connect with peers, and engage in healing activities. The RISE retreat responded to that need by offering a safe, immersive environment for self-discovery.
Key Outcomes
Here are the highlights from our survey of participants:
- 94% reported feeling more confident in expressing themselves
- 100% felt emotionally supported
- 94% built meaningful connections
- 88% reflected on their emotions in new ways
- 94% felt safe to be authentic in the group
Most notably, 75% of participants had never attended a program like RISE before, showing the value of reaching new youth audiences through arts-based wellness.
What’s Next
Feedback from participants and facilitators highlighted opportunities for future improvements, including more hands-on outdoor programs, expanded dance or team activities, and deeper follow-up sessions to sustain momentum.
