A recent act of generosity is helping one of our Sports & Recreation leaders continue doing what he does best, showing up for our community.
If you’ve been to one of Bastrop County Cares’ Care-A-Van events, you may have met Andrew “Drizzy” Flores. As one of our Sports & Recreation leaders, Andrew is often right in the middle of the action, setting up games, encouraging children to join in, building their confidence, and helping create a welcoming space where kids can play, connect, and simply be kids.
What many people didn’t see was the challenge Andrew faced just getting to work each day. Without reliable transportation of his own, getting where he needed to go wasn’t always simple. Still, Andrew found a way. He continued showing up for work, for his team, and for the children and families he serves throughout our community.
Recently, a generous couple learned about Andrew’s situation and donated a car to him. For Andrew, receiving the keys meant much more than having a vehicle. It meant being able to get to work without worrying about how he would get there. It meant greater independence, stability, and the freedom to focus on his family, his responsibilities, and the future he is working toward.
“Having reliable transportation has already lifted a huge burden off my shoulders and given me peace of mind. This car is much more than just a vehicle, it represents an opportunity to continue working toward my goals and building a better future for myself and my family.”
And while the car was given to Andrew, the impact of that generosity doesn’t stop with him.
Every week, our Sports & Recreation team takes Care-A-Van into communities across Bastrop County. Our team bring games and activities, but each one has a purpose. Designed for children ages 0–5, Care-A-Van activities use play to introduce important skills such as emotional regulation, confidence building, communication, and positive social interactions.
Now, when Andrew gets behind the wheel to head to work or out into the community, the generosity of two people travels with him. That is what giving can look like. It doesn’t always have to be a car or a large donation. Sometimes it is $10. Sometimes it is $25 or $50. Sometimes it is volunteering your time, sharing a resource, or simply recognizing a need and choosing to help.
At Bastrop County Cares, we see how those individual acts come together. They allow us to bring programs directly into neighborhoods, connect families with resources, create opportunities for children, and continue building a community where people know they have someone in their corner.
Andrew described his gift as providing him with “hope, stability, and encouragement to keep moving forward.”
